Sew Much Fun!

I got a sewing machine for Christmas.  I have been wanting to learn how to sew for a very long time now (ok... maybe like a year?), but since I have a bad rep for having absolutely no follow-thru, I really never did much about it except search blogs for all the cute things I could make.  Well, I finally compromised with Evens and got myself a sewing machine (not a fancy-schmancy one... just in case I do quickly lose interest).  It has now been 4 months and I just turned it on for the first time yesterday.  To be fair to myself, I had no idea what to even do with it.  So I found a place close to me that offers sewing classes, but the only time she does them is during the day and I obviously can't take my kids with me!  So a month ago I pulled out the DVD instruction manual and figured "how hard can it be?"  Ha.  After putting the thread somewhere and bobbing it on something and winding it somewhere else, it got pretty tangled and I got pretty frustrated and I promptly packed the dang machine back up until someone could show me what to do.  (Unfortunately I am a visual learner, so I can't learn how to do something unless I can see someone doing it right in front of me).  Anyway, so yesterday my mother-in-law was at my house and I just thought "hey!  I bet she could show me how to get started!"  and she did!  She put the thread in (correctly), and showed me how to start it, and showed me how to sew, and what all the different threads and types and widths, and other stuff that I'm still not too sure about.  She had to leave fairly quickly though, so I only got a very basic run through of how the machine works.  Another problem I have: I can't just take things slow and teach myself the basics and work my way up.  I just kind of throw myself in and figure I will learn from my mistakes.  So.... LOOK WHAT I MADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Using this blog for my tutorial I made Kara a skirt with leggings using 2 of my old shirts.  Yay me!  Granted, it is far from perfect.  The skirt is a little too tight, and so if it didn't have the leggings attached she would look like a 4  year-old hooker, but for playing in, it works.  I am so stinking proud of myself.  Oh, the possibilities are endless now!
